The collection includes correspondence of Dr. Robert Eden Peyton (1804-1872), physician of "Gordonsdale," Fauquier County, Va., and as a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania (some letters concern Richard Henry Peyton of the U.S. Army); account books, 1827-1841, as administrator of the estate of Dr. Chandler Peyton (1769-1827); account books, 1830-1844, concerning mercantile operations of the firm of Robert E. Peyton & Company of Fauquier County, Va.; and records, 1837, of the Benevolent Temperance Society of Salem (now Marshall), Va. Also includes family correspondence, 1830-1898, of Dr. Peyton's wife, Nannette Lee (Jones) Peyton (1812-1905). Also, includes letters, 1897-1913, written to Cornelia Gover (Foster) Peyton by John Singleton Mosby, and an order, 1865, issued by Mosby disbanding his Partisan Rangers (43rd Virginia Cavalry Battalion, C.S.A.); correspondence, 1829-1839, of Richard Henry Peyton (1811-1839) at the U.S. Military Academy and while serving as a U.S. Army officer in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida; correspondence, 1852-1855, reports, and miscellany of Richard Henry Peyton Smith (1840-1855) as a student at Charlestown Academy, Charles Town, Va. (now W. Va.); and miscellaneous materials of various female members of the Jones, Peyton and Scott families.
